Building Blocks for a Stronger Sugarbeet Program

Building a resilient sugarbeet program requires more than reacting to problems as they appear. It means proactively protecting the crop from planting through harvest.

Vive Crop Protection’s sugarbeet portfolio is designed to do exactly that: provide early root-zone protection, strengthening plant health through the growing season, and deliver stronger disease control when it matters most. Three key building blocks that work together to create a stronger, more resilient sugarbeet program.

Building Block 1: Plant strong with early Rhizoctonia defense

A strong sugarbeet crop begins below the soil surface. Early-season diseases like Rhizoctonia crown and root rot can weaken stands, reduce vigor, and limit yield potential long before symptoms appear above ground.

AZteroid® FC 3.3 fungicide provides broad-spectrum soil disease protection when applied at planting, helping suppress early pathogens and reduce the risk of late-season disease pressure.

Early protection sets the stage for several key benefits for growers:

    • Improved plant establishment and more uniform emergence
    • Reduced early disease pressure in the root zone
    • A stronger crop foundation that supports yield and sugar accumulation

Plus, AZteroid FC 3.3 mixes easily with liquid fertilizers, micronutrients, hard water, and other crop inputs, without clogging or compatibility issues.

Bonus: For North Dakota growers, you can now apply Midac® 4 insecticide at-plant for long-lasting systemic control of sugarbeet root maggot in an easily pourable, fertilizer-compatible solution.

Building Block 2: Stay strong and boost plant health

Once the sugarbeet crop is established, maintaining plant health becomes critical to maximizing sugar production. Stress from disease, environmental conditions, or inconsistent plant growth can reduce canopy development and limit photosynthesis, ultimately lowering sugar content.

Give your sugarbeets a mid-season boost with a foliar spray of AZterknot® fungicide at the 4-8 leaf stage for a boost of plant growth and stress tolerance. With dual-MOA, broad-spectrum disease protection that delivers strong, uniform leaf coverage, AZterknot helps sugarbeets stay healthy, resilient, and full of sugar through harvest.

Many growers have reported an increase in sugar content and tonnage when using AZteroid FC 3.3 in-furrow followed by AZterknot.

“We were seeing a ton and a half more in the beets themselves and a .5 point more in sugar content in the fields where we used AZteroid FC 3.3 and then AZterknot,”

said Minnesota sugarbeet grower Orin Knutson.

Building Block 3: Finish strong with enhanced Cercospora leaf spot control

Late-season disease pressure can undo months of crop progress. Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) is one of the most destructive foliar diseases in sugarbeets, reducing photosynthesis and forcing plants to divert energy away from root and sugar development.

For effective control of CLS in sugarbeets, a proactive, season-long strategy with Phobos® FC fungicide is essential:

    • Start clean by applying Phobos FC as part of the first or second foliar fungicide spray of the season.
    • Stay clean through harvest with a second application during the final one to two spray intervals.

While other products like Proline® tend to ridge and clump together, Phobos FC delivers widespread, uniform leaf coverage and dries stronger for decreased rain wash off. Growers can have the peace of mind that their foliar protection is staying where it needs to be to deliver strong sugar yields at harvest.

Conclusion

Protecting sugarbeets isn’t about a single product; it’s about combining the right building blocks to support the crop at every stage of the season, and with increasingly complex growing conditions, to maximize ROI. With Vive Crop Protection’s portfolio, growers can build a stronger program that protects yield potential, maintains sugar content, and simplifies crop protection.
